Im musikalischen Schaffen von Sabine Zimmer geht es immer um den einmaligen Moment – im überregional konzertierenden Improvisations-Ensemble „Transformer“ oder der Duo-Formation „PianoManie“ ebenso wie im „Brandt-Zimmer-Duo“ der klassischen Kammermusikerin. Doch besonders ausgeprägt kommt die Passion für die absolute Präsenz im musikalischen Augenblick in ihren improvisierenden Stummfilm-Vertonungen zum Tragen: im Zusammenspiel mit bewegtem Licht auf der Leinwand. Deutschlandweit ist Sabine Zimmer auf diesem Gebiet als gefragte Spezialistin tätig, u.a. beim Stummfilmfestival in Karlsruhe, in den Filmmuseen Düsseldorf, Potsdam und in Berlin.
Aufgewachsen ist Sabine Zimmer in Torgau bei Leipzig. Da in ihrem Elternhaus wenig Bezug zur Musik gepflegt wurde, waren die ersten Berührungen mit der Welt der Klänge eindrucksvolle Erweckung, prägende Weichenstellung und Berufung zugleich. Begeistert singt schon die Fünfjährige als Jüngste im Kinderrundfunkchor – und entdeckt in einer Dorfkirche beim Klang der Orgel ihre Bestimmung: mit einer Klaviatur die Welt zum Klingen bringen. Bei Georg Frackowiak erhält sie mit neun Jahren ersten Klavierunterricht, nimmt schon bald darauf an Wettbewerben teil und gewinnt erste Preise, u.a. „Jugend musiziert“ und der „Chopin-Werkstatt Leipzig. Bereits als Zwölfjährige wird sie 1994 als Jungstudentin in die Nachwuchsförderklasse für Hochbegabte an der Leipziger „Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy“ aufgenommen. Hier wird sie durch Prof. Gudrun Franke am Klavier und im Fach Klavierkammermusik gezielt gefördert.
Gleichzeitig befasst sich Sabine Zimmer zunehmend mit Improviation/Komposition und entwickelt im Wechselspiel zwischen klassischer Ausbildung und absoluter künstlerischer Freiheit ihre ganz persönliche Auffassung vom Klavierspiels als „Musik-Machen“: untrennbar eins mit Neugier, Hingabe an den musikalischen Augenblick und Leidenschaft für das Überraschende – „l’impromptu“ – das aus dieser Hingabe entsteht. So konzertiert sie schon als Sechzehnjährige mit dem Ensemble „Impuls“ auch mit eigenen Kompositionen, (Theatertage Leipzig 1998, Kulturfest Eisenach u.a.), und im Medium Film entdeckt die ambitionierte Nachwuchspianistin einen weiteren idealen Spielpartner: die laufenden Bilder. Angefangen mit „Nosferatu“ vertont sie schon als Teenager im KAP-Kino Torgau ihre ersten Stummfilme.
Das ordentliche Musikstudium absolvierte Sabine Zimmer 2000-2006 an der Hochschule Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy sowie an der Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Wien (Kammermusik bei Marialena Fernandez und Avedis Koujoumdijaan; Liedbegleitung bei David Lutz). Wichtige Impulse erhielt sie außerdem von Karl-Peter Kammerlander („Meisterkurs Französisches Lied“) sowie 2005 im Kammermusik-Meisterkurs Brünn. 2006 erlangte sie ihre Diploma für Kammermusik/Korrepetition, Klavier (Gerhard Erber) und Klavierpädagogik.
Neben der klassischen Ausbildung vertiefte sie kontinuierlich ihre Studien der Stummfilmimprovisation (u.a. bei Tilo Augsten); 2006 folgte die Aufnahme in den Masterstudiengang Filmmusik Ludwigsburg. Bilder durch Klanglandschaften in Schwingung versetzen, um ihnen eine emotionale Dimension zu verleihen, entwickelte sich seither zur eigentlichen Leidenschaft der vielseitg versierten Pianistin, die Stummfilme „durch meisterhafte, selbst komponierte musikalische Begleitung gekonnt untermalt.“ (B.Sandner). Im Erfassen der atmosphärischen Grundtonlage eines Films, im Ausarbeiten einer musikalischen Idee, die das Geschehen auf der Leinwand rhythmisch und harmonisch trägt, ist Sabine Zimmer ganz in ihrem Element.
Seit 2015 spielt sie zusammen mit Hui Chun Lin (Cello) und Klaus Roth (Percussion) im experimentellen Trio-Ensemble „TRANSFORMER“, das sich ebenfalls der zeitgenössischen improvisierenden Stummfilmbegleitung verschrieben hat. Und 2017 gründet sie mit ihrer Partnerin Susanne Unger das Improvisations-Klavier-Duo „PianoManie – 4 Hände, 2 Köpfe, 1 Klang“. Außerdem konzertiert sie regelmäßig mit der Violinistin Uta Brandt im „Brandt.Zimmer.duo“ mit einem breiten Repertoire von traditionell-romantischer Kammermusik, bis hin zu modernen Werken, u.a. aus der minimal music.
Sabine Zimmer war ab 2008 als Dozentin an der Musikschule Berlin klavierpädagogisch tätig. Sie ist Mutter von drei Kindern und lebt in Berlin/Kladow.
The focus of Sabine Zimmer’s musical work is always on the unique moment – in the nationwide concerts of the improvisation ensemble ‘TRANSFORMER’ as well as in the duo ‘PianoManie’ or in the ‘Brandt.Zimmer.duo’ of the classical chamber musician. But the passion for absolute presence in the musical moment is especially pronounced in her improvised silent film scores: in the interaction between changing light effects on the screen. Throughout Germany Sabine Zimmer is a sought-after specialist within this genre, e.g. at the Silent Film Festival in Karlsruhe, at the Film Museums in Dusseldorf, Potsdam and in Berlin.
Sabine Zimmer grows up in Torgau near Leipzig. Having only little relation to music at her parents‘ home, her first contact with the world of sound is an impressive awakening, a defining moment and at the same time a vocation. Even as a five-year-old she sings enthusiastically as the youngest in the children’s radio choir and listening to the sound of the organ in a village church discovers her destiny: To make the world sound with a piano. At the age of nine she has her first piano lessons with Georg Frackowiak. Soon after she takes part in contests and wins first prizes, among others ‘Jugend Musiziert’ and the ‘Chopin-Werkstatt’ Leipzig. In 1994, already at the age of twelve, she is admitted as a youth student to the class promoting young talented musicians at the ‘Academy for Music and Theater Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’ in Leipzig. Here she is specifically promoted by Prof. Gudrun Franke on piano and in the subject piano chamber music.
At the same time Sabine Zimmer increasingly focuses on improvisation/composition. Through the interplay between classical education and complete artistic freedom, she develops her very own personal view of playing the piano as ‘making music’: Being inseparable one with curiosity, dedication for the musical moment and passion for the unexpected. As a sixteen-year-old she performs concerts with the ensemble ‘Impuls’, also with her own compositions (‘Theatertage Leipzig’ 1998, ‘Kulturfest Eisenach’ and others). And in the medium of film the ambitious young pianist discovers another ideal partner: the moving pictures. Starting with ‘Nosferatu’ she records her first silent films at ‘KAP-Kino Torgau’ as a teenager.
Sabine Zimmer completes her studies in music 2000-2006 at the ‘Hochschule Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’ in Leipzig as well as at the ‘Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst’ in Vienna (chamber music with Marialena Fernandez and Avedis Koujoumdijaan; song accompaniment with David Lutz). She also acquires important impulses from Karl-Peter Kammerlander (‘French song masterclass’) and in 2005 at the chamber music masterclass in Brünn. In 2006 she gets her diploma in chamber music/correpetition, piano (Gerhard Erber) and piano education.
In addition to her classical education, she continuously deepens her studies in silent movie improvisation (e.g. with Tilo Augsten). In 2006 she is admitted to the master’s program ‘Filmmusik Ludwigsburg’. Setting images in vibration through soundscapes in order to give them an emotional dimension, has since then developed into the real passion of the experienced pianist. Her silent movies are “skillfully painted with masterful, self-composed musical accompaniment” (B. Sandner). In capturing the atmospheric foundation of a film, in elaborating a musical idea that rhythmically and harmoniously carries the events on the screen, Sabine Zimmer is completely in her element.
Since 2015 she has been playing with Hui Chun Lin (Cello) and Klaus Roth (Percussion) in the experimental trio ensemble ‘TRANSFORMER’, which is also dedicated to the improvised accompaniment of contemporary silent movie. And in 2017 she forms the piano duo ‘PianoManie – 4 hands, 2 heads, 1 sound’ with Susanne Unger. Besides that she regularly performs with violinist Uta Brandt in the ‘Brandt.Zimmer.duo’ with a broad repertoire from traditional romantic chamber music to modern works, among others from the minimal music.
From 2008 Sabine Zimmer has worked as a teacher at the Music School Berlin. She lives in Berlin-Kladow with her family.
